How You Actually Pay a Dental Clinic Abroad

"How do I pay" was one of the most common questions in the largest thread we have read on going to Mexico for dental work, and it is barely covered anywhere. The short version for Los Algodones: it runs on US cash, most clinics take cards, and the ones that publish their terms charge you 2-4% for using one. Below is what each clinic we have read says, quoted from its own pages, with the date we read it and how far through the directory we have got.
the card surcharge is real, and it is published
This is the part worth knowing before you go. Of the clinics we have read so far, two state a processing fee outright: one charges 4% on credit and debit cards, another lists 3-4% on PayPal and 2-4% on a bank transfer. On a single crown that is small. On a full arch it is a few hundred dollars, and it is applied at the counter after you have agreed the price. ⚠️ Read the table carefully: a clinic that does not state a fee has not told us there is no fee — it has told us nothing. Ask before you hand over a card, and ask whether the fee applies to debit as well as credit, because at least one clinic applies it to both.
why US dollars in cash is the default
Los Algodones sits a short walk from Arizona and prices itself in US dollars; one clinic states plainly that USD cash "is the most common way to pay". Cash avoids the card surcharge and any foreign-transaction fee your own bank adds, which together can be 5-7%. The trade is that carrying several thousand dollars across a border has its own risks, and cash gives you no chargeback if the work goes wrong — which, for a treatment you cannot easily return to have redone, is not a small thing to give up. There is no universally right answer here; there is a fee you can now see and weigh.

If you are carrying more than $10,000 in cash or its equivalent in or out of the United States, US Customs and Border Protection requires you to report it on FinCEN Form 105. This is a reporting requirement, not a limit and not a tax — there is no cap on how much you may carry legally. Failing to report it is what causes the money to be seized. Full-mouth treatment abroad can cost more than this threshold, so it is worth knowing before you plan to pay a large bill in cash. The rule counts the total carried by people travelling together, not per person.
paying in stages, and what financing actually is
Several clinics split treatment into two payments across the two trips, which matches how implant work is done anyway — one payment at placement, one at fitting. That is worth asking for regardless of whether it is advertised. Where clinics mention "financing", read it closely: in the cases we have read it is a third-party lender such as Klarna or a US medical-loan provider, subject to credit approval, not the clinic extending you credit. The rate and the risk sit with that lender, and an advertised headline APR is the best case, not the offer you will get.

How much cash can I take across the border?
