How Many Trips Will You Need?

the short version

Work that is finished in the chair — a crown fitted to an existing implant, a filling, a cleaning, a set of veneers on prepared teeth — can be a single trip. Work that involves placing an implant into bone is not a single trip, because the implant has to fuse with the jaw before anything is loaded onto it. That is a healing interval measured in months, not a scheduling preference, and no clinic can compress it away.

why implants take two trips, not one

An implant is a post placed in the jaw, an abutment, and a crown on top. The post needs to integrate with the bone before the final crown goes on — our implants pillar covers the three-to-six-month timeline in detail. The practical shape of it for a traveller is: one trip to place, a gap, then a second trip to fit. Some clinics offer a temporary in the interim. A clinic promising a permanent full-arch result start to finish in a few days is describing a different procedure from the one you think you are buying — check what is named in writing.

if you only need the last piece, it is one trip

There is a version of this that almost nobody writes for, and it is the cheapest trip anyone makes: you started treatment at home, your insurance ran out partway, and you need one component finished. A crown fitted to an implant post already placed in the US. A replacement crown on an old implant. The healing is done, the diagnosis is done, and nothing about the biology forces a second visit — so this is a single trip, and for a border town it is a single day. Two things to sort before you go: get the implant system and reference from whoever placed it, because the new clinic needs the exact system to fit a matching part, and ask the receiving clinic in writing whether they can fit the crown in one visit or need to send it to a lab. bone grafts and sinus lifts add a stage

Where there isn't enough bone to hold an implant, grafting comes first and it needs its own healing time before placement. This is the single most common reason a two-trip plan becomes a three-trip plan, and it is also the most common reason a quote grows after the X-rays. It's a strong argument for getting imaging done before you commit to travel dates.

how this changes the maths by destination

For a border town this matters much less — a second visit to Los Algodones from Arizona is a drive, and many patients place implants at the start of a snowbird season and return for the final teeth before heading home. For a fly-to destination it dominates: two long-haul trips to Antalya or Cancún can absorb a large share of what the treatment saved. what we can't tell you yet, and are working on

The honest limit of this page: everything above is procedure-level, not clinic-level. What we cannot yet tell you is how many visits a specific clinic in our directory says it needs for a specific procedure — whether it fits the crown on a return visit, or partners with a local lab for same-trip delivery. That is a per-clinic fact, it changes your flight bill, and no directory in this field publishes it. We are recording it clinic by clinic from clinics' own published pages, the same way we record prices and implant brands, and it will appear on the clinic profiles as it lands.

which clinics actually say, in writing

We read the published price and treatment pages of 31 of our 33 clinics looking for this one fact. 5 state a visit count anywhere. The rest publish prices for multi-stage implant work and say nothing about how many times you have to travel. Neither large directory in this field publishes it at all.

Each figure is the clinic's own published wording, with the date we read it. Where a clinic is absent from this table we read its pages and found no visit count — not that it requires more trips. One clinic in the directory has defeated every attempt to read it and is excluded rather than guessed at.
