Veneers and crowns solve different problems, and the entire "turkey teeth" scandal comes down to one being sold as the other. The difference is how much healthy tooth gets removed — and once it's gone, it's gone. Here's how to tell which you actually need.
what a veneer is
A thin shell — porcelain/E-max or composite — bonded to the front of a tooth. The dentist removes a small amount of enamel so it sits flush, then bonds it on. It's a cosmetic fix for shape, colour and small chips on otherwise healthy front teeth. One thing patients miss: even a veneer isn't reversible, because enamel doesn't grow back — but the amount removed is minimal.

A cap that covers the whole tooth, which means grinding away most of the healthy tooth on all sides to seat it. A crown is the right treatment for a tooth that's badly broken, root-canaled or heavily decayed — where there isn't enough sound tooth left for a veneer. On a healthy tooth, that removal is a permanent loss you never needed to take.

The package clinics quote a full set of "veneers" fast and cheap, then place full crowns — because crowns let them reshape a whole smile in a week regardless of the starting teeth. The word on the invoice is the whole game.

Cosmetic change on healthy teeth points to veneers — or often just whitening or bonding, which are even less invasive. Structurally damaged, root-canaled or heavily filled teeth are where crowns are legitimate. The test of a good dentist: they recommend the least destructive option that solves the problem. Twenty crowns on a complaint-free mouth is a revenue plan, not a diagnosis.
